BSR FRS – Round 3 – Silverstone

Following the second round for championship at the Circuit Zolder, after another week’s break, the BSR Formula Renault Series traveled to part Northamptonshire part Buckinghamshire for the third meeting racing around the historic layout iteration. With massive speeds, the slipstream played a very crucial role throughout the four races of the day.

After 6 laps of qualifying, Maarten Van Loozenoord placed his Academy car on pole position by just over 2 tenths. Followed by Samuel Libeert of the main team with fellow team mates Peter Berryman and Pashalis Gergis all within a tenth of each other. Antoine Higelin and Oscar Mangan were the next two Apex cars to place in the top 10.

Race 1 started off very cleanly. All 37 contenders funneled through the Maggots and Becketts complex without any hiccups with Maarten holding the lead up the Hangar straight. As the pack reached the end of the lap, Maarten unfortunately caught a slide and Sam took the lead. He quickly pulled out a decent gap with Antoine and Peter having a several lap battle for the duration of the race. Also further back, Josh Thompson of the academy team and Oscar, along with Jack Keithley of FEKA Simsport were also scrapping it out not giving any room despite affiliations with Apex. After 11 laps, Sam claimed the chequered flag with Antoine and Peter rounding out the podium. After a final lap dash, Oscar also took P5 to round out the Top 5. Josh and Maarten both scored great points for the Academy team and Pashalis made a fantastic recovery drive after coming from P36 to P11 after an incident towards the start of the race.

Race 2 had a 25 place reverse grid, over half the drivers and would be a challenge for sure for the quicker drivers right in the middle. As the race started, everyone made it through turn one quite well, however things turned awry as a forced 3 wide from another car resulted in a small contact between Josh and Oscar. Although there was no damage, John Godfrey of the Academy ran wide for the second part of the complex, a pileup followed with several cars, including Apex were damaged forcing some to retire also. It was a limp home for most, however Pashalis and Peter both scurried through and took another double podium for the main team, a contributing points haul.

For Race 3, after the Wheel of Grid Fortune, it was a 27 place reverse for the grid. Maarten and Oscar were both starting high up and within a few laps they held 1-2 by a considerable margin. Sam was looking very fast but an unlucky incident resulted in a second DNF of the night after showing dominating pace in Race 1. After the last lap, Tom Depke, Dan McAuley and Josh claimed healthy top 20’s. Pashalis claimed a great 7th place after starting 26th. Antoine and Peter cut through the field like butter and almost caught up to Oscar which resulted with a 2-3-4 for the main team, but it was Maarten who took a very well deserved win to add to his stat.

In Race 4, Maarten and the rest were to start from 23rd upwards after the reverse grid. A fairly clean start saw almost all cars make it past lap one except for Sam who was struck yet again with bad luck. There was good battles all throughout the entire field for the 11 laps. It was Apex 1-2-3-4 at one point however a check up between all the cars into Brooklands saw Peter and Josh make contact leaving Peter with a damaged front wing, losing him several places. To finish the day, it was Pashalis Gergis who took the win with Maarten close to him after coming from so far back. Antoine took the final podium spot with Josh making a great 4th place for the Academy team. After being held up for a while, and going side by side with Nathan Davies for almost an entire lap, Oscar took 6th place. Further back, Pete took an eleventh place while John Godfrey and Dan McAuley of the Academy team both took Top 15’s. 8 Apex cars out of 10 racing placed inside the Top 15. A great result showing the strengths of both teams.
