iWCGPS – Round 12 – Indianapolis

The World Championship Grand Prix Series returns after Okayama, the next track to tackle was the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the holy grail of IndyCar. 24 drivers took to the grid for 73 laps around the built in road course which twists and turns within the oval banking. Apex drivers racing this weekend were Peter Berryman, Graham Carroll and Alex Simpson, find out how they thought the race went.

Peter Berryman

Qualifying went OK this race first lap got me 9th on the grid with the second lap ruined by 1 mistake but only cost me 2-3 positions on the grid.

As for the race, the start was great, I had a good launch off the line and passed 3 cars before Turn 1. Soon after though, I realized that the guys fighting us were on low downforce trim while we were on high trim, which was just impossible to keep those guys behind. All I could do was run my own race and hope for a top 10.
In the end, I finished in 8th place which was damage limitation and incredibly frustrating knowing if we had low downforce a podium was possible so overall a very disappointing race and result.

Thanks to the guys that are left to practice and help out. On to Spa.

Graham Carroll

Qualfying, I only completed 1 lap in Q. I tried to change stuff on the car for the 2nd lap and that didn’t help anything, so P5 wasn’t too bad.

Race, Getting a good start up into P4,I knew by the end of the first lap all the other drivers were on low downforce and I couldn’t overtake anyone down the straight, so it was just make the best of it and see what comes to us during the race. Ended up P8 with 10/15 laps to go and with some contact ahead and tyres falling off, so we ended up P6. Not bad for how the race felt. I would like to think our pace will be a lot closer at spa and really looking forward to it,

Thanks to everyone that’s putting the time in and see you’se at Spa.

Q) I decided not to qualify as I had a drive through penalty and mid pack starts here are always very interesting.

R) Gutted to have the penalty as I made a flyer, would of been 12th after the first lap, without it. After the drive through I just focused on putting in consistent lap times and saving the tyres. Before I knew it I had to pit in and get some fresh boots. I made a few places in the first stint but nothing too great, I just kept my head down in the second stint and chipped away at the stragglers at the back.
With about 10 laps to go the leaders came past and I was able to keep pace using the DRS to gain a few more spots, throw in a couple of disqualifications and that moved me up to P14.
Looking at my pace I think I would of ended up P10 or 11 without the penalty, so I will take the result with a smile to only have lost out on a few championship points.
Really closing in on the top 15 spot, which would be a good result for the season I have had, with all the technical issues and DNF’s.

Time for some fun at Spa!

The championship will be heading to Circuit de Spa Francorchamps as the series heads towards the final rounds. You can also view the championship standings and results here. Until then, catch the race on RaceSpot TV, and keep up to date with our other drivers competing in other championships such as the BSRTC (live on ApexRacingTV every Thursday at 8pm British Time) and more!
