PEDERSEN STEAMS TO VICTORY LANE IN THE FIRST RACE OF THE McLAREN SPEC SERIES

Apex Racing UK Driver Jesper Pedersen, was competing in the Mclaren Spec Series Round 1 around Zolder, in a two man team together with Marcello Maio under the name “Team RPM”. Both Jesper and Marcello was both between the drivers, who was named as favorites for the Championship, so together it would be a very strong Team.

Setup:

When I first started making a setup, I knew it was a 100% a race setup I needed to build because the tires on the new McLaren goes off very fast. But when the time for quallfy come, I was worried about the qual performance. For the next round at Spa I will build 2 diffrent setup’s for sure.

Qual:

Again I was worried, because the qual-performance was bad. But I hoped for a top 5 with the Race setup. Hampus had connection problems, after a strong pace in the Warm-up practices. Managed to get 3rd on the grid. Anders 2nd and Marcello “Senna” Maio on pole! Yay!! 4 point to him for claming the Pole Position.

Race:

When the red light turned on, on the grid, Anders Dahl began to roll and he got a black flag. So I knew Marcello and I had a good chance to win the race. Got a decent start, and Marcello almost stalled so I was past into T1. I thought I was heavy fueled (18 laps), and he would overtake me back very fast. But it was not the case, after some laps within a 1 sec gap, Marcello made a small mistake into the first chicane. After this I pulled a small gap before the pit stops. Have not planned any strategy, so I thought I will do a short 2nd stint and try to get fastest lap, which is worth 2 points. But I went out in traffic so had no chance to put in a faster lap, than I already had done. The faster stop and less fuel helped me to improve the gap to Marcello, 14 sec before 2nd stop.

Had no clue how much fuel I needed to get home, so I just put 66kg in the tank to be safe. Stupid now I had waaaay to much fuel and the car had a too low ride height. So for the first laps after the stop, I had to go very slow trough the chicanes. But managed to extend the gap to 20 seconds, and win the race with 18kg left in the tank.

The first race of the season, was really great fun. But also getting a good start on the season, with a win in such a strong field is always nice. Next round will be at the very legendary track Spa Francorchamps. Hopefully Apex Racing UK driver Jesper Pedersen can leave Spa with a great result.
