I was quite satisfied with the work done on the setup the week before the race. My best was 1.45.5 and i finished 3 tenth behind it. I could have been a little bit more aggressive but my goal was just to make the cut. I did a little bit better than that by finishing 21st on the grid. We were many drivers on the same tenth. I knew the race will be close.
I picked the team’s race setup because it was much more reliable in fast turns than mine. I was on a 1 stop strategy with a pretty early stop on 24th lap. It was pretty risky to stop so early starting in the middle of the pack but it was also more fun 😀
Then came the big moment, the start. I made a good launch but I didn’t take any risk under braking on the first turn because I know well how treacherous is Spa first lap.
Thankfully, I survived turn 1 with 5 or 6 positions gained. But a few seconds later, on the hill climb, I saw smoke in front of me and I took the wrong decision. I wanted to avoid mayhem by taking to the right on the grass. I nearly stopped and I made a slight contact with one of the damaged car. Luckily, the car was intact but I came back on track with a pack of heavily fuelled cars I front.
Then I started to go up the ranks. I overtook Jan Niesiolowski on 3rd lap on the bus stop braking. I was surprised how early he braked and I took advantage of it by going to the inside. 7th lap, iI finally took advantage on Fabio de Carmo after several attempts. We almost made contact twice… But it was good clean racing.
On the 8th lap i overtook Javier Martinez Arrieta and 2 laps later Michele Chesini.
I was 12th and I realised the time lost was too big to have a chance to catch the cars in front. I decided to slow down, 3 or 4 tenth slower than what i did on training. It was a good bet because i gained 4 positions by just staying on track.
8th on the line was really unexpected but I have mixed feelings because many of my team mates were caught in accident.
They will hopefully have better luck next time.
